From Frump to Fab

Small changes can make a big difference (and it doesn’t cost much to make a change). Today let’s look at a few changes, with classic pieces that can really change your look. To see a video sharing this illustration click here. A darker wash denim looks dressier, that’s not to say that light was denims bad… I love light wash denim on casual days. But if I am trying to elevate my look, I will choose a dark wash style. Also, having jeans that fit well is huge. I know personally I have gained weight and lost weight and been about 4 different sizes in the last few years. Stay on top of the fit of your jeans, as it is more flattering to wear jeans that fit well.

There is nothing wrong with a white t-shirt, I wear one often. To bring your look up a notch, switch the t-shirt for a crisp button down top. Now, on to shoes…I’m all about comfort, however we can still have comfort in a current style shoe. Again, that’s not to say we should throw out our older shoes. I have shoes I’ve loved for years. But if the goal is to move from frump to fab, I need to wear a shoe that is currently in style.

Lastly with this look, let’s look at the purse. Backpacks are great, I use one often and love them! If my goal to to look a little more put together and stylish, I’m going to choose a cute, current style purse.

Here are a few more quick tips to help elevate your look to feel more put together:

wearing all black OR all white is sleek and stylish

elegant style sunglasses (great options on Amazon)

choosing the right undergarments (nude under white top or pants)

steam or iron your clothes

polish nails and toenails if wearing open toe shoes

Lastly, confidence! Confidence is the most flattering thing you can wear (not cocky-ness, but confident in who you are in this season of life).

  1. I am SO glad you mentioned ironing your clothes! I’m still at a loss as to why that is considered so much work by some folks. To me, it is a must!!!

  2. Hi! I love your style! I am 73 years old and could use help with an age appropriate style. I have always been very conservative. Recently we were robbed and lost all of my clothes besides all of my furniture and household items. My heart hurts and I have lost all of my sense of security. I could use some suggestions. I am 5’ and am 120 lbs (just gained 15 lbs from stress and health problems). Need some help finding myself. I lost my confidence and could use advice. Thank you for all the wonderful styles you suggest.

    1. Hi! I am so sorry, what a tragic thing to go through! I would start with the basics and build on that. For instance, white button down, jeans, black pants, cardigan, blazer, etc.
